College Wrestling

Doing this blog about wrestling in college has given me a chance to look back and see what it has been like to go to school full time, work part time and wrestle full time. It has been quite an experince wrestling, working, paying bills and keeping up on school work. Then keeping everyone in your life happy (parents, freinds, coaches, professors, boss). All together it definately ends up being a full time job. But I am proud to say (even though it sucks sometimes) that I made it, maybe not the smoothest but I sure made it.

Districts

After looking at the results online it looks like we are having a pretty good first day. Tomorrow I will be heading there to do some recruiting for coach and see if there are any Cincinnati guys who want to stay home and wrestle in college. Hopefully we can get a few to place top 4 and get them to Columbus to compete at the State Tournament.

Mount Awards

Today we turned in all of our gear and coach told us we were going to be having an awards banquet at the end of March. Since we didn't have a banquet last year, I am pretty excited about having one this year. Being the only senior, I was looking to get some free stuff. But I probably won't but I am proud to be the only senior that made it all 4 years. Coach had a meeting with all the team, but since I obviously won't be wrestling next season, I was allowed to leave.

Sectionals

My high school team quialified 8 guys to the District tournament. Being a very young team this is a great accomplishment to have done. Out of the 19 wrestlers only 1 senior and 2 guys have their drivers license. This shows how young the team is and how much potential they have as a whole. Being at a small public school it is very hard to get large numbers, which in turns lowers the possibility of having better athletes in the long run.

Dixie

recently I went back home to wrestle with my old high school. I often do this to help out the kids and help out my old coach. Many people think I am crazy to drive an hour there and back just to wrestle with high schoolers, but I do it to put back into the program that helped me out when I was in high school. As well as helping out my possible future team, wrestling is always the sport that somehow ends up giving back. Maybe not soon but eventually it will give back, as long as you put time into it.

4-Years

My wrestling career is offically over, very interesting knowing my freshman year we had about 15 guys come out and my senior year I was the only one left. This shows me that only certain kinds of people are made to make it through a rigorous and very demanding sport. Although I never made it to the National Tournament I am proud to say I made it all 4 years, safely and legally.

Conference Results

The College of Mount St. Joseph recorded a 21-15 win against Manchester College and a 43-6 victory over Rose-Hulman today to capture the HCAC Championship. Head Coach Casey Stouffer was named Conference Coach of the Year while junior 141-pound wrestler Eric Meyer was named Co-Wrestler of the Year.

Meyer, 149-pounder Dave Harris (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon), 157-pounder Bryan Massong, 174-pounder Jesse Hooven and 184-pounder Chad Craft were each named All-Conference. All five Mount wrestlers went 2-0 during the tournament.

Regionals

The Lions had four, third-place finishes and two, fourth-place finishes to highlight their fourth-place team standing at the Division III Midwest Regional Championship. 141-pounder Eric Meyer 157-pounder Bryan Massong , 184-pounder Chad Craft , and 285-pounder Thomas Taylor all turned in third place finishes for the Mount. Meyer is a first alternate for the March 5-6 NCAA Division III National Championship.

Conference

On Friday the wrestling team traveled to North Manchester, Indiana. This makes it the 3rd weigh in for the starters in 6 days, it may seem simple but it really takes a toll on the body and the brain. But the team was happy about gettin' a Saturday and Sunday off. After gettin' there the team had to wait around for a good 45 mintues to weigh in (NCAA Regulations). Then we warmed up in 20 minutes (not enough time) then we jumped in, our coaches were worried that the first dual (against Manchester) would be close but it ended up being pretty much one sided. After Manchester was beat the team knew that we had wrapped up the conference. (Rose-Hulman only has 5 guys). So The Collge of Mount St. Joseph became 2-Time HCAC Champs (3 Teams in the Conference with Wrestling?!?!?!)

Home Match

Recently the wrestling team hosted 2 teams in the Harrington Center. University of Indiapolis and College of Notre Dame. The team fell short to both teams, it seems that it is tough for everyone to get fired up for home matches. A few of the team members had some bright spots. Senior night was held for 1 individual, which was ironic considering his freshman year there were around 10-14 freshman and 4 years after there is 1 left. This must mean college wrestling isn't for everyone.

Wrestling in the KY

The week coming up to the single dual between us and Campbellsville was a slow and annoying 5 days. Knowing we had to make weight to wrestle one match makes everyone irritated but it was exciting to know we had the that saturday and the next weekend completely free. The gym we wrestled in was quite sad, we shared a locker room with the home team and the offical (referee) had never called a college wrestling match. We out wrestled the entire team but they ended up winning the dual. Their coach was not happy with their performance and out coach was very happy, since we were never out worked and never stopped wrestling.

MSJ Wrestling

The Mount wrestling team recently took a long bus ride to Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. None of the guys were really looking forward to the 9 hours on a bus just to wrestle a few matches. But in the end we all had a good time and won the tournament. Along with winning the tournament we also had 3 champions. Needless to say the 9 hour trip back was much better.
